St Helier Jersey, January 2005

Jersey from the West

The Jersey Story

The home of Bergerac and that horrible old car he drove will be the host to the weekend. Louise and I are off to the little Isle of Jersey where the majority of road names are French but yet the local tongue is 'traditional' English. We're visiting a friend for her 30th Birthday, to a Bollywood style party which sounds like a hoot, except I have no costume yet...am I leaving this a little late?

We flew from Southampton, with FlyBE for the 35 minute flight which was really convenient, a quick check in and short walk lands you at the departure gate in a matter of minutes. We took advantage of the duty free to of course, with Jersey classifying as a non EU destination. Jersey airport was even smaller again, with our checked in luggage actually beating us to the arrivals and baggage reclaim, that's a first!

Emma's 30th Bollywood style

Having left the UK behind in the grey drizzle and arriving in Jersey with the sunshine beaming down was a bit of a treat so we took advantage of the afternoon and went into St Helier to have a spot of lunch. Getting stumped on restaurant choices, we dived into a book shop to browse a Pub Guide but found the Channel Islands somewhat overlooked in the books we turned to. Fighting hunger pangs we settled for Pizza Express, cheap and cheerful usually but were left disappointed. Having filled our stomachs at least we took a walk around the town and then took to the open road in our sporty hire car.....a Fiat Punto, well, it's not as if you can enjoy the roads with a 40mph top speed limit in any case.

Returning to Emma's who very kindly put us up in the spare flat, we got ready for the party, donning our costumes. We joined the party, being welcomed by a glass of champagne which gave us the dutch courage we needed! Emma and Chris's flat looked amazing, they'd hung drapes and material from floor to ceiling and had the lighting just right, the atmosphere was perfect! As everyone arrived the canapes started flowing, as did the alcohol....what a party, everyone had such a great time, with the real party animals leaving at 5am although Louise and I bottled out a little earlier than that!

A lazy Sunday was in order, we mouched around for the morning, had a bite to eat and made our way back to the airport. Here are some photos to fill in the gaps.
